How to stay safe in chat rooms
Chatting with strangers can be fun, but no site can guarantee your safety. These habits protect you on Hello Stranger and anywhere else.
Protect your personal information
Don't share your full name, home address, school or workplace, phone number, social media handles or photos you wouldn't want public. Never send money, gift cards or codes to someone you've just met.
Recognise common warning signs
Be cautious if someone rushes to move the chat to another app, asks for money, offers something that sounds too good to be true, pressures you for private photos or video, or threatens you. Anyone who does these things can be reported.
Use the tools
Tap anyone's avatar and choose Report to send the case to our moderation queue. Reports are reviewed by a person, and we don't promise a specific outcome for each one. Room moderators can mute people, move them to the listeners, remove them and ban them, and Ops can mute and remove. You can step down or leave a room at any time.
Voice, video and chat in rooms
Everyone in a room can hear you when your microphone is on, and see you when your camera is on. Turn your camera off if you're unsure, check what's visible behind you, and avoid showing mail, screens or anything identifying. Recent chat messages are kept as room history, so don't type anything you wouldn't want others to read later.
Community guidelines
Hello Stranger is for adults only. Don't harass, threaten or discriminate. Don't share sexual content involving anyone under 18, which is illegal. Don't spam, sell, or scam. Don't record other people without their consent. Breaking these rules can get you removed from rooms or from the platform.
If something goes wrong
If you feel unsafe or a crime has happened, leave the room, take notes of what happened, and contact your local police or emergency number. A report on Hello Stranger doesn't replace that.
Age requirement
You must be 18 or older. The confirmation on our age screen is a self-declaration, not an identity check. If you're under 18, please leave.
